The Environmental Stewardship Center (ESC) is excited to welcome back all of our students, staff, and faculty back to campus for the spring trimester! We hope everyone had a relaxing break because we’re ready to hit the ground running with a host of exciting events this term. Our interns are located in Dewing Commons Monday through Thursday, and you can always stop by to ask questions and learn more about what we do! Below are all the ways the ESC is actively working to make a greener, more sustainable campus this spring:
Sustainability SIP Symposium
We’re so excited to announce our 2026 Sustainability SIP Symposium! Honoring the work of incredible seniors across all corners of campus who have completed Senior Integrated Projects dealing with themes of climate change, the environment, and sustainability, the Symposium will include a keynote speaker, presentations, great food, and lots to celebrate! The event is free and open to all! Come join us in the Arcus Center on Wednesday, April 22nd, from 6:30-9pm. In the meantime, keep an eye out for senior spotlights coming out soon on our Instagram!
Hoop House
The Hoop House is happy to host open hours again this term! Open hours this term will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4:30-6:30pm. We’re also excited to host a number of events, including flower pressing, paper-making, herbal tea making, etc. Check our Instagram to stay updated!
Composting
Composting is back up and running this term! In fact, our composting interns are already distributing mature compost from the fall and winter terms to the Jolly Gardens and the Hoop House. Grab a bucket to support our composting team and be a part of a sustainable local food cycle! And don’t forget to be on the look out for Groove Grove during 9th week!
P.E. Classes
It’s spring, which means it is time for everyone’s favorite P.E. courses: composting and gardening! These courses highlight our campus’s commitment to experimental learning and developing a sense environmental responsibility, core pillars of our Climate Action Plan. If you haven’t had the chance to take one of the amazing classes yet, be on the look out next fall and spring terms!
Global Climate Education Week
Every year, the World Wide Climate & Justice Education Week is an event focused on creating Climate and Justice dialogues across primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, and the greater international community of advocates across the globe. A “Teach-in” model invites students, staff, faculty, community leaders, and faith groups to create space and participate in solutions-oriented discussions about climate change that will drive interdisciplinary perspectives and cultivate actionable solutions. This year, Kalamazoo College is happy to participate with faculty from a wide array of departments, ranging from fine arts to business to the natural sciences. The Global event occurred in March, but Kalamazoo College’s Climate Education Week takes place during Week 4 with faculty incorporating environmental and sustainability issues into their lessons, and we encourage you to ask your profs to participate!
Climate Connection Series
The Climate Connection Series aims to not only discuss the Kalamazoo College’s Climate Action Plan goals but also to encourage students to incorporate those goals into their academic and personal lives. Two events will be held this term, one in Week 6 discussing the learning and environmental responsibility goals and the other in Week 7 discussing the resource conservation and greenhouse gas emission goals. More information coming soon!
Week 8 Community Reflection
The Climate Action Plan (CAP) Committee is happy to host the Week 8 Community Reflection! Committee members, which include students, faculty, and staff, will come together to discuss a basic overview of the CAP and its goals, major wins that we’ve accomplished, and where we’re headed now. Additionally, the CAP Committee aims to encourage students to get involved, stay informed, and incorporate the CAP into their own lives through this community reflection. More details coming soon!
Sustainability Chats
The ESC is happy to continue hosting our biweekly Sustainability Chats! Every even week Wednesday we come together during common time (11am) to discuss on-campus environmental opportunities and news – snacks provided!
